Title: Serenity
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Steven Knight
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Diane Lane
Runtime: 1 hr 46 mins

What It Is: Baker Dill (McConaughey) is a fisherman on a tiny island. He takes the rich out to sea in order to fish for the biggest and most dangerous of aquatic delicacies. As he deals with a lack of funds there’s a giant tuna that continues to escape him. Driving him almost to the point of mania. As a mysterious woman named Karen (Hathaway) who is the mother of his child appears a twisted game begins to unravel for Baker.

What We Think: What the hell is this movie? This is an early contender for worst movie of 2019 already. I have no idea what Matthew McConaughey has been doing since winning his Oscar for Best Actor for Dallas Buyers Club. Anne Hathaway is so bad here as well. The script and narrative are ridiculous and borderline stupid. There’s a ton of great actors doing terrible work here. This isn’t fully on director Steven Knight because he has SOME talent his previous film Locke is a brilliant piece BUT doesn’t feature any camera movement…I see why. Overall there are no redeeming qualities to this film. In every sense of filmmaking, it stumbles. ESPECIALLY the nonsensical story.

Our Grade: F, This is the first fail I’ve given in quite some time and it is well earned. This is completely inept filmmaking. Not only is there rarely an interesting moment if one does show up for you (and I DOUBT it will) it’ll be ruined by the dumb logic choices and ridiculous script. Trust me when I say this…I DO NOT recommend this movie to any one anywhere for any reason. Lest you enjoy losing brain cells every minute of its runtime. I want 106 minutes of my life back, please!
