Title: Ralph Breaks the Internet
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Phil Johnston, Rich Moore
Starring: John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Gal Gadot
Runtime: 1 hr 52 mins
What It Is: Ralph (Reilly) is back and he’s going to wreck it! This time in an attempt to spice up the mundanity of his best friend Vanellope’s (Silverman) game Sugar Rush he destroys part of a track. This leads Vanellope to explore the off-road track and damages her game. Now, in order to save her game wreck has to help repair it. Trouble is that the part is on eBay. Now Ralph must traverse the internet to find a way to get that part and save Sugar Rush.
What We Think: Ralph is always a fun experience and that’s no different here. John C. Reilly is just a guy, even when it’s only his voice, that you cannot help but like. That works when trying to garner sympathy for him even in moments when his character doesn’t deserve it. Silverman keeps her character fresh and adds some existentialism to the whole thing. Gal Gadot is still wonderful and adds a lot to her role as the stunt driver Shank. A fun time and a likely Oscar nominee. This is Disney in its element. The introduction of the webs largest sites helps push the point of the film rather than being JUST a cash-in, unlike Emoji Movie is effective in its utilization of these brands.
Our Grade: B, Not as good as the first, though that feels like an unfair comparison. It is still a fun adventure, this time, in a new location. Less exploration of the video game world it instead focuses on things like YouTube and comments on the culture of the internet as a whole. A film I recommend for sure. But don’t forget DON’T READ THE COMMENTS!
