We had an absolutely incredible opportunity, to speak with Sitges and SAG winner Andrea Riseborough about her film Nancy. Check out the trailer for Nancy above. In this interview, we discussed what it was like working with some of the cast and crew as well as her thoughts on the character of Nancy and how she prepared for a character such as this.
After an introduction from the amazing people at Shelter PR we were connected with the talented Ms. Risebourough. I started off by thanking her and in a lovely Northern English accent. Andrea, in a tone that is quite soft she welcomes us into her world, if only for a moment.
Our first question was an explanation of what this film is, and who her character, Nancy Freeman is. What I got from her was an answer I didn’t expect. A theme that would continue throughout the interview. She explains that Nancy represents “a fine line between boredom and mental breakdown”.
To the why she took this role is was a mix of things but the primary reason was writer/director Christina Choe. After reading the screenplay she was hooked and knew this was a project she wanted to do. She speaks on working with actor John Leguizamo whom she referred to as “amazing”. Stating that her first exposure was as Manny the Fanny from the HBO show Mambo Mouth. In fact, what’s interesting is in 2017 and 2018 both she and Leguizamo would work together on the small screen in both Bloodline and the mini-series Waco.
When asked about her career she credits director Mike Leigh and said anytime she’s worked with someone they’ve inspired her in one way or another. I asked her if 2018 might be her best year yet given that three fantastic films all came out with her in them. The Death of Stalin, Mandy, and of course the film she’s here to talk about Nancy.
To finish the interview we asked her what we ask every one of our guests. If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have two films with you…what would they be? To this, we can quote Andrea as saying that it was “impossible” to do so. Your friendly neighbor snob thinks that a completely viable answer.
