Title: The Long Dumb Road
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Hannah Fidell
Starring: Tony Revolori, Jason Mantzoukas, Taissa Farmiga
Runtime: 1 hr 30 mins
What It Is: College student Nat (Revolori) is a relatively sheltered guy. On his cross-country drive from his Texas home to art school in Los Angeles, he is befriended by perennial loser Richard (Mantzoukas). Now the two of them are heading to LA with a pit stop in fabulous Las Vegas, NV to drop off Richard. All the while absolute insanity and utter craziness will ensue. Are they even going to make it to Los Angeles on time, or at all.
What We Think: There are a substantial few issues with this film. First and foremost among them is that Richard as a character is terrible. At no point in the film do we like him. Nat’s arc is very predictable and overall only works some of the time. Great actresses in Taissa Farmiga and Grace Gummer are terribly wasted. Even Revolori who’s made his name with films like Dope and of course The Grand Budapest Hotel. Here he’s given nothing much but does some decent work. I like Jason Mantzoukas. Dude is funny, but if not reigned in his persona can be a bit much. That’s the biggest issue.
Our Grade: C+, Even though some of the jokes miss when they do hit they’re quite funny. Overall I enjoyed the film and if you want something a little light that will make laugh, by all means, take a gander at this film. I think a general audience will find great amusement here, but for me not ENOUGH clicked to give it a higher grade. Really cool to see Ron Livingston in, like, anything! I miss that guy. Perhaps one of Revolori’s earlier works is a better option. This film is currently on VOD for those who are interested.
