Title: Sierra Burgess is a Loser
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Ian Samuels
Starring: Shannon Purser, Kristine Froseth, RJ Cyler
Runtime: 1 hr 45 mins
What It Is: Sierra (Purser) is kind of a loser (as the title suggest) she and her best friend Dan are band geeks. Not exactly the creme of the crop their school. In a case of mistaken identity, her foil Veronica (Froseth) is the most popular girl in school. Now they must help each other gain the attention of each other’s crushes. Which may prove more difficult then either of the ladies thinks it will be.
What We Think: Oh Netflix. Such a hit or miss production company. For every great film, they put out they put out something so utterly the opposite. Here instead of a romantic comedy with something warranted and charming like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before we get this. Even down to having Noah Centineo in the film. It’s all just so…rehash. I know that this genre isn’t exactly a fresh one and that there’s a TON of tropes but giving in to each and every one of them without thought is the worst sin a RomCom can commit. Purser tries to raise the crap script and can’t do anything with it. No one here is particularly likable. It’s a poor excuse for Cyrano de Bergerac that is equally poorly executed.
Our Grade: C-, It’s all very meh. It’s charming enough to watch on a throwaway Wednesday afternoon. Cute to a fault with nothing there to really chew on the ending tries but just fails. Every beat is one you’ve seen done better in more excellent films. Homages are everywhere with this and joins The Kissing Booth as ANOTHER drag of a RomCom from the big red N. Please stop making these if they’re going to be this bad.
