Title: Between Worlds
MPAA Rating: Not Yet Rated
Director: Maria Pulera
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Franka Potente, Penelope Mitchell
Runtime: 1 hr 30 mins

What It Is: When a trucker named Joe (Cage) discovers a woman at a truck stop being strangled Joe does what anyone would try to do in this situation. He tries to save her. Thing is this woman, Julie, WANTED to be choked. You see when she is she can see her daughters soul and try to will her back to this plane of existence. Her daughter Billie (Mitchell) was in an accident and during the attempts to save her something very strange happened.

What We Think: Seriously, WTF! Trying to describe to you above what this film is actually about was exhausting! Especially without giving away any of the insanity. Cage is not nearly as unhinged as normal but still wacky as all get out. Potente tries to work as a pseudo straight person to the comic stylings of Cage and Mitchell the latter of which is just bonkers. Pulera works as a ringmaster for both the camera and shenanigans of her leads. It all goes off well. Mitchell offers a decent performance for what this film is and that makes all the difference especially once the narrative’s twists start to take shape.

Our Grade: C, Utter insanity doesn’t make up for the weak narrative that’s there. Cage is spectacular but not off the rails enough to sell this. I know that seems a bit weird. But really I feel like there was a bit too much held back on a concept like this. Either way a slight recommendation can definitely be given. You should be able to check this one out sooner rather then later on video on demand. Any Nic Cage fans out there (aka MY PEOPLE) you are going to love this. Most everyone else…I’m cautiously optimistic.
