Title: Ibiza
MPAA Rating: TV-MA
Director: Alex Richanbach
Starring: Gillian Jacobs, Phoebe Robinson, Vanessa Bayer
Runtime: 1 hr 34 mins
What It Is: Harper (Jacobs) works a job she utterly despises. For a boss who, she’s pretty sure hates her. When she’s sent on a trip to Spain to secure a business deal, of course, her two best friends Leah (Robinson) and Nikki (Bayer) are going to come along as well! When they end up going clubbing Harper meets super hot DJ Leo (Richard Madden) they tend to hit it off. When he goes to Ibiza the following night Harper seeks to re-meet her DJ beau.
What We Think: Gillian Jacobs always bring something funny to her roles. Here her charm and charisma carry the whole thing. Bayer and Robinson do a wonderful job as her wing woman. Bayer especially has some funny moments. Sadly the script lets them down and the direction isn’t anything to write home about. Looking at the story it’s meh. Same ole same ole. A girl has less than stellar life, hates her boss and life. Same finding a guy and realizing your life is now complete thanks to him. Blah blah blah. If you’ve seen it once you’ve seen this before.
Our Grade: C-, Netflix is at it again. Making a subpar piece of cinema. This seems to be an epidemic. Even with super talented women all over the cast, this can’t pull itself out of tropeamania. Whatever Richanbach does next you won’t find me running to check it out. Also, the soundtrack for this film is an utter annoyance. I cannot and will not give the film a firm recommendation. This is one of those “if it interests you check it out” cases don’t sprain yourself running out to see it though. On to the next one for Netflix.
