Title: In Relationship
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Sam Boyd
Starring: Emma Roberts, Michael Angarano, Dree Hemingway
Runtime: 1 hr 30 mins
What It Is: Hallie (Roberts) and Owen (Argarano) have been dating for a few years now and it seems like their life is reaching a turning point. Likewise, two of their friends Owen’s former roommate Matt (Patrick Gibson) starts up a relationship with Hallie’s friend Willa (Hemingway). Now we have two couples on the opposite ends of the relationship spectrum just trying to make it work in this modern context. But will it actually work out for either pair or will the modern life suck them down into eternal singledom?
What We Think: I’ve read the other opinions on this and I know I’m in the minority that really loved this. This is a film that we’ve all lived through. Whether it’s the dissolution of a relationship or just not understanding your partner. We’ve all been there. It asks questions of its audience. Things like “You’ve been here, right?” or bringing to the table who they perceive as the wrong party. Roberts and Angarano have really good chemistry, even when the script comes off a bit derivative. Boyd doesn’t have to bring his A-game to this but instead he really just kinda lets the film flow. It’s for the better this way.
Our Grade: B+, It is for sure a really good romantic comedy. One that certainly doesn’t reinvent anything and is more than happy to retread that old familiar feeling. There’s no official release date for this one, but those who know me and are fans of these types of films should certainly be on the lookout for this one. It works like a millennials guide to failure and success in a relationship and in that regard, it works swimmingly.
