Title: Hotel Transylvania
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Genndy Tartakovsky
Starring: Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez
Runtime: 1 hr 37 mins
What It Is: Following the events of the previous two films, Dracula (Sandler) and his daughter Mavis (Gomez) are pretty exhausted. As a surprise to him Mavis purchases tickets to a cruise around the Bermuda Triangle. When the ships captain Ericka (Kathryn Hahn) is not what she seems is arises suspicions in Mavis, and ignites the flames of love in Dracula. All the while his gaggle of ghosts and ghouls are out to just have a good time.
What We Think: Let’s be Frank(enstein) bout this, the first two films in this series are not exactly animated classics. There are some laughs here but often it feels too much like Adam Sandler’s real-life fair. Thankfully director Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory) wrote the actual words or else we’d have been in even more trouble. None of the voice acting is great, but that doesn’t kill the film. Instead, it just exists. There are a couple of laughs peppered in but not enough for the adults in the audience. As pure child fodder it works, outside of that…it doesn’t.
Our Grade: C, Not complete crap this is really nothing more than fodder for children as stated above. How is it that Adam Sandler is only digestible at this point as an animated character. That’s a truly sad state we’re in. I don’t really recommend it for adults but if you’re a parent you’re kids are going to find laughs all over this thing. This is because the humor is juvenile at best, but I suppose that was the intended audience. Either way, you don’t really have to have watched the previous two in order to get what is going on. If you liked either of those…I’ll see you at the theater? I won’t be there to watch this but I digress.
