What It Is: Initially setting out to lose his virginity, Alex (Daniel Doheny), quickly realizes that the girl of his dreams might not be who or what he’s into.
What We Think: Aside from the obvious coming out story this film is another film a part of a bigger picture. Normalizing a teen experience that isn’t out of the 1950s. The film’s teens experiment with drugs and sex but they also have a better grasp on the spectrum of sexuality than most adults. Most of the actors are just breaking into the big screen which will bring forth an era of diversity a lot of us have been waiting for. The film doesn’t miss a comedic beat and manages to be crude without being too cringy. The only downside to the film is its predictability. Unlike European films, we like feel-good movies that end on a high note or at least leave us with some hope. While you’re watching trying to figure out if Alex is going to act on his sexuality, you also kind of know he has to in order for the film to come to an end. But a coming out story has to end that way. It isn’t quite Love, Simon, but it is a unique story and gives a voice to many of us who are still trying to figure it out.
Our Grade: B, This is a fun, light-hearted film. I enjoyed the diverse cast of emerging actors as they seemed to really fit their roles. My correctness crusading self-was put off by some of the dialogue in the film, but all 99 minutes was a conversation to be had. These teen films are really growing on me. I recommend checking this film out soon.
