Title: Hotel Artemis
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Drew Pearce
Starring: Jodie FosterSofia BoutellaDave Bautista
Runtime: 1 hr 34 mins

What It Is: In the near future Los Angeles is in constant riots over an electricity shortage. When an attempted robbery goes wrong a thief with the code name Waikiki (Brown) heads to the safest place any criminal can go to the Hotel Artemis. This hotel for the depraved is run by The Nurse (Jodie Foster) and her trusty medical assistant Everest (Bautista) they’ll patch up all the worst baddies LA has to offer. That is if they’ve paid their dues and follow the rules of course.

What We Think: I enjoyed this. It isn’t well-written but it’s dumb as sin. That stupidity never strays into utter ridiculousness. When it takes the time to be funny it kind of is. Its action is solid and well enough directed. What I think I really liked were the world building and the characters. They’re fun and having to use the codenames in the hotel was a really additionally fun little part. I think if you go into this just expecting to have fun you will. It’s bloody and violent enough to satisfy audiences looking for fair of that ilk.

Our Grade: C+, Certainly not terrible and really it isn’t that bad. Outside of sketchy writing, there’s a ton to like. Zachary Quinto maybe chews a bit too much scenery and his performance is an annoyance among the crowd. I recommend this one, though looking at the box office numbers most of you just ignored this one. Check it out if it’s still playing near you I promise you’ll have a good time. It has a John Wick vibe to the Artemis that fans of those films might just enjoy. Also, Bautista is really fun and plays this role to an okay degree, maybe knock off the accent. I hated it.
