Title: The Female Brain
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Whitney Cummings
Starring: Whitney Cummings, Toby Kebbell, Beanie Feldstein
Runtime: 1 hr 38 mins

What It Is: Dr. Julia Brizendine (Cummings) studies the human brain, and she loves it. It has however affected how she deals with her own emotions. We are also introduced to a series of couples all with different issues and of different demographics. There’s the older couple Steven (Deon Cole) and Lisa (Sofia Vergara). Successful Basketball player Greg (Blake Griffin) and his equally successful wife Zoe (Cecily Strong) among others. Dr. Brizendine looks to change opinions on the female brain but what she finds, along with answers to her questions might be as equally important.

What We Think: Whitney Cummings was obviously very VERY green behind the camera. Additionally, the acting isn’t anything to write home about. Cummings is a bit too stiff. Feldstein is very funny and comes off naturally and I loved what Blake Griffin is doing with this one. He was probably the most pleasant surprise. This is a bit of a slog to get through and that stems from Cummings short….comings behind the lens. I think she’ll get better as it is her first endeavor.

Our Grade: D+, A less than stellar debut for comedian Cummings. A fantastically diverse cast cannot save a rather bland film that allows it’s premise to get in the way. Heaving in a love interest, that the script lays bare as almost a nothing, and not even the talented Toby Kebbell can save it. This is a pass for sure. Unless you’re curious as to Cummings’ work as an actress and/or director. Nonetheless, I look forward to the next project just to see if this was a one-off bad day or if she really isn’t fit behind the lens. We’ll find out.
