Title: Happy Death Day
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Christopher Landon
Starring: Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, and Ruby Modine
Runtime: 1hr 36 min

What It Is: Tree (Rothe) wakes up in a dorm room every morning and is greeted by Carter (Broussard). The night before she had gone home with him and when she awakens every morning she is in the same place. She lives the same day over until she is killed that night. She is killed in multiple ways, but the end result is still the same. The cycle repeats. She knows that she has to figure out who is killing her and why. When she confides in Carter, he has an idea to make a list of people who may want to kill her. She lives through each day over and over again and finally finds out who may be behind the person who is killing her.

What We Think: I went into the movie not hoping for the best and I was honestly surprised. I like how we take the fresh idea of combining movies like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer with Groundhog Day to create this film. The movie just like any other slasher film leaves you asking who is doing it and why. It is a fun roller coaster you go on though throughout the film and it pays off at the end. The movie does tie everything together so it is not a cheesy ending.

Our Grade: C+, In a cinematic world, we live in where every horror movie has that potential and falls flat on its face, this movie proves it wrong. The movie surprisingly made good money over its initial weekend release and there is a reason for it, it’s surprisingly good. Jessica Rothe really carries the film with her acting. You find her to be a bitch in the beginning of the film and are rooting for her, but by the end of the film, she’s your best friend. It just shows that range that Rothe brought into this film that really helped it to be successful. The movie wasn’t every other cliché horror movie that just shows mindless killings. The movie has a point and purpose behind it, even though it may not be the best one. Overall, the movie is entertaining and your always asking yourself: who is it? Don’t walk in with thoughts of grandeur and this movie will pleasantly surprise you.
