Title: Tragedy Girls
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Tyler MacIntyre
Starring: Brianna Hildebrand, Alexandra Shipp, Nicky Whelan
Runtime: 1 hr 30 mins
What It Is: Sadie (Hildebrand) and McKayla (Shipp) are two BFF’s that have an affinity for murder, blood, and gore. Running an online social media brand known as “Tragedy Girls”. As more deaths begin to pile the two know who the killer is and under the guise of the now captured killer these two girls are determined to become a viral sensation and they don’t care who has to die to make that dream a reality.
What We Think: This is an absolute joy of a black comedy. It’s a horror film in practice but its tongue lay firmly in cheek. Both Hildebrand and Shipp are blissfully sadistic in their charisma here. Craig Robinson (who was a producer here) has a small but very funny part. Former NFL safety Kerry Rhodes is also in this. That’s weird, but he’s rather funny in his role as well. This film does not short it’s audience on the blood and gore either. It was quite jarring for me but dammit if I didn’t love that! Mind you I am not a horror fan by any stretch of the imagination, but the funny bits here offset that. I found this an unbelievable surprise.
Our Grade: A-, Color me surprised! I came in with no expectation because being that it was a horror movie I wanted to give it a shot. Whatever I had in my head was surpassed. A really refreshing film that gives 2017’s girl-power message a swift kick in the junk. A bloody good time that cast a crimson net all over everything it touches. FOR SURE I recommend you check this out when it is released on October 20th, which is the perfect time for it to do so!
