Title: It Had to Be You
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Sasha Gordon
Starring: Cristin Milioti, Dan Soder, Halley Feiffer
Runtime: 1 hr 25 mins

What It Is: Sonia (Milioti) has been dating Chris (Soder) for quite some time now. That being said Chris finds it only appropriate at this time to propose to Sonia. Here’s the thing though Sonia does not think she’s ready for such a commitment. As doubt creeps in about whether or not this is the course she wants to take in her life she may end up hurting the man who loves her.

What We Think: There’s a lot to like here. Milioti is charming and neurotic to the bone…no doubt about it. She plays Sonia as a woman whose getting what she wants in life but has no idea how to handle that scenario. Chris comes off as ready to start his life with this woman. I appreciate the perspective the film gives in regards to its female characters and I think some of that may stem from the director herself being a woman. It never makes the audience feel dumb and the motivations of the characters are decent. One flaw I’d like to point out in the script is how easily on and off again the protagonists’ relationship was. This is somewhat prevalent towards the end of the film. I won’t spoil it but you’ll see what I mean when you watch the film.

Our Grade: B-, It is a rare romantic comedy that can actually stand out and do something different. This film doesn’t reinvent the wheel but it at least has a great pair of tires on it. We’ve reached out to the production and we’ll be posting an interview with writer/director Sasha Gordon as soon as we get that whole thing going. In the meantime I recommend you check out the film ASAP as it’s available on VOD right now!
