Title: Hidden Figures
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Theodore Melfi
Starring: Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe
Runtime: 2 hrs 7 mins
What It Is: Telling the unbelievable true story of three women working at NASA who are all working to get astronaut John Glenn into orbit. These three women Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson all have differing goals in NASA. Dorothy is just looking to help keep jobs and learns to do this by working with the new IBM machines that arrive. Katherine is known as a “calculator” and was hired to help, but ends up being the main person performing equations to help propel the vessels out of and back into space. Lastly, we have Katherine who dreams of being NASA’s first engineer.
What We Think: There’s a privacy to this film that is lovely. It feels like we’re watching three lives unfold almost naturally. All three ladies are great here but I’d like to point out Janelle Monáe who gives yet ANOTHER killer performance. She was also incredible in Moonlight she may be turning into an excellent actress. Speaking of Moonlight Mahershala Ali is also in this film in a smaller role. How did that happen? Theodore Melfi does a nice job directing a very small film. He gave up possibly directing Spider-Man: Homecoming for this. I think this will help him get whatever he wants to do next off of the ground.
Our Grade: B, Awesome surprise with this film here. As I said I love it when a film is good and I expected it to be good. Those are the best sorts of cinematic experiences. I think you’ll enjoy this flick so this should definitely be something on your radar. Check it out, the ladies in this deserve to have their great work praise by more than just this schmuck.
