Title: Ouija: Origin of Evil
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Mike Flanagan
Starring: Elizabeth Reaser, Lulu Wilson, Annalise Basso
Runtime: 1 hr 39 mins

What It Is: A “medium” and her two daughters add the titular board game to their scheme. When the youngest daughter Doris (Wilson) begins to deal in the macabre following her play with the game it unleashes something that she and her older sister Lina (Basso) are unprepared for. Now her mother Alice (Reaser) with the help of a priest (Henry Thomas) they try to solve the mystery of what’s in this home and what sort of help has been unleashed.

What We Think: Far be it for me to say whether this film is good or bad. I will instead say this, it far exceeds the movie it is a prequel to OuijaHere was get some decent acting especially out of Basso who at this point may be on her way to scream queen fame. See Oculus if you need an indication of this. I think when speaking on this we have to go to the script which is much better, and the acting clearly a cut above. I loved what director Mike Flanagan did with just the smallest of effects. There’s like these small burns in the “film stock” almost as if you’re watching a film from the period this takes place in. Very subtle but awesome touch.

Our Grade: C+, Considering the level of awful the first was this didn’t have much to contend with. It did better than just be superior to the first, it stands on its own as a decent horror flick. I’d recommend this to anyone who is really into horror. In addition, if there’s anyone out there who enjoyed the previous film you will certainly like this as it is far better.
