Title: Captain Fantastic
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Matt Ross
Starring: Viggo Mortensen, George MacKay, Kathryn Hahn
Runtime: 1 hr 58 mins

What It Is: Ben (Mortensen) is a father of six children living in the wilderness of the pacific northwest must now deal with having to do it on his own after tragedy strikes. As they travel back into humanity Ben starts to realize that perhaps his parenting techniques, unconventional they may be, might not be the best choice. Additionally, perhaps he sees the isolation from the “real” world may or may not be detrimental to his children’s growth as his oldest son Beau (MacKay) prepares to embark out into the world.

What We Think: This is for sure a movie that surpassed my expectations. Viggo Mortensen is great here and it is his relationship with his kids that makes the whole affair believable. This works even when the situation seems to not fit anything a parent would do. Whether it is using rock climbing as an exercise or centering their chi with a bit of yoga everything he has them do is different from the norm. It’s an odd story to have to tell but it is one I think that writer-director Matt Ross does so elegantly.

Our Grade: B+, A really good script, and good performances highlight one of the independent scenes most surprising successes. I love what this great film brought us, what it tells us about fathers and sons, and the family dynamic. That no matter what these strings we tie to each other are a stronger bond than we could hope for. I recommend you check out this film! Its a good family dramedy that really will put a smile on his face. See it for Viggo stay for everyone else. It really will surprise and delight you!
