Title: Suicide Squad
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: David Ayer
Starring: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis
Runtime: 2 hrs 3 mins
What It Is: When Amanda Waller (Davis) needs to solve a big problem. As an entity known simply as Enchantress (Care Delevingne) plot potential disaster Waller has the plan to stop her! What is that grand plan? Assembling a smorgasbord of bad guys to clean up the mess and in doing so ridding her and her organization of all responsibility should they fail. With the likes of “The Man who never misses” Floyd “Deadshot” Lawton (Smith) and the unpredictable psychopath Harleen “Harley Quinn” Quinzel (Robbie), these guys might just be the worst heroes ever!
What We Think: Narratively it is a mess but one cannot stop and love the characters. Will Smith was really good as Deadshot. We understand the characters motivations and feel for him. Margot Robbie really grasps what the character of Harley Quinn is. One guy, I feel I need to mention is Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. He was a riot, though minimal. Ayer has an eye for the grungy. All of his films have this layer of filth on them. Like they need to take a shower of some sort. It’s an edge in his films I find as a sort of hallmark.
Our Grade: C+, It is somewhat disappointing but really does thrill in some respects. I’ll go ahead and recommend you check this one out! Jared Leto is grossly underutilized but rumors have circulated that there were several of his scenes cuts from the films release. I really think Viola Davis’ characterization of Amanda Waller was bad ass. She’s a tough lady who really is fierce throughout. I wish the story and villain were better but alas there’s probably not going to be another superhero film that feels and plays like this.
