Title: Captain America: Civil War
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Anthony & Joe Russo
Starring: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson
Runtime: 2 hr 26 mins
What It Is: Our star-spangled hero returns for the completion of what might be Marvels best trilogy. In this Steve Rogers(Evans) is in the middle of stopping terrorists in Africa when disaster strikes. This disaster causes the United States government to enact the Sokovia Accords which state that super beings may only be dispatched when asked to do so. As Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) readies to adopt these Cap feels these are an unnecessary show of power. This, this is the catalyst for potential strife within The Avengers. Will this blow up in the face of all involved and perhaps be the straw that breaks the Avengers apart.
What We Think: Marvel really got it right here. Not only is Spiderman done right, but it builds it’s universe up even further. One glaring issue I think needs to be addressed is that the stakes with which the “Civil War” begin are just not as high as they should be given everything. One thing I thought would be an issue was that it would feel more like an Avengers film than into the canon of Captain America. Yeah safe to say that did not happen. It’s action-packed demeanor perfectly fits with both Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: The First Avenger it is almost a culmination of those two films. With that said it is a great time at the movies and any and all audiences will be excited to see this film.
Our Grade: A-, Whereas Avengers: Age of Ultron felt like a film ready to say “on to the next one” this one focuses a little more on establishing its own story. It gets lost in too many subplots but this isn’t an epidemic like Ultron or even Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Let me stop that flame war by saying I am a DC guy. I think their characters are in general better. Having said that cinematically we care more about the characters in Civil War and thus it keeps us more invested. Also, the villain once again is terrible. Get that shit together Marvel!
