Title: MacBeth
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Justin Kurzel
Starring: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jack Madigan
Runtime: 1 hr 53 mins
What It Is: Based on the writings of William Shakespeare this tells the story of MacBeth the Thane of Glamis. He has received a prophecy from three witches that he will one day be the King of Scotland. This leads to MacBeth becoming consumed by this supposed destiny. So much so that he kills his King and takes the crown and throne for himself. One thing that is perhaps unforeseen to him is the consequences of those actions.
What We Think: Kurzel and his cinematographer craft an excellent looking film. Sadly it is just that and nothing more. Cinematically it is straight gorgeous. I find it perverse in its utter disrespect of the source material. It does this thing that many movies do nowadays and takes itself just way too seriously. There’s no spine to it. It’s all bloody battles and murderous intent. Fassbender gave a great performance as did Marion Cotillard. Both try their best to keep this interesting but sadly Kurzel’s pacing buries it. I rarely fall asleep in a movie and even more so I love watching Shakespeare on the screen but this uh uh. I nodded off at least twice and fell asleep once.
Our Grade: B-, If it weren’t so damn beautiful this film would be a complete and utter failure. With all of its reds and oranges, the warm tones permeate through the entire films lense. Its actors are let down by the directors misguided direction and ability to move the plot along. I’m going to recommend this film if you’re a fan of just beautiful looking films. Shakespeare fans should be wary of this as the changes from the source could irritate people who look upon films like this through that light.
