Title: The D Train
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Andrew Mogul, Jarrad Paul
Starring: Jack Black, James Marsden, Kathryn Hahn
Runtime: 1 hr 41 mins

What It Is: Dan Landsman (Black) is the head of his high schools reunion committee. When it appears that almost no one has RSVP’d to the reunion Dan makes it his mission to get the big man on campus from his class Oliver Lawless (Marsden) to the reunion. This becomes his mission after seeing Lawless in a national TV spot for Banana Boat sun tan lotion. Dan goes out to Los Angeles to court Oliver for the reunion, and while he may or may not succeed this trip definitely forever alters Dan as well as his relationships.

What We Think: Very straight forward story that hits the beats you think it will, except one. It’s as if the whole films story revolves around something completely unexpected and that’s possibly because it is. Marsden has always looked like the douche bag from your high school and here he gets to stretch that muscle. Black is far more reigned in here, and thats to the films benefit as the archetypical Black performance would’ve been out of place here. Sadly there’s nothing remotely special about the words being spoken nor the picture displayed that allow this to stand out.

Our Grade: C, As the film is fair to midland so shall the rating be. My expectations were that it would blend in with the scenary, and that is exactly what it did. Nothing of note besides perhaps it’s second acts…climax. Once you see the film that’ll make more sense. Not a bad film, so it is one i’ll tentatively recommend, especially since it is currently available on Amazon Prime, and at a Redbox near you!
