Title: Ted 2
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Seth MacFarlane
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane, Amanda Seyfried
Runtime: 1 hr 55 mins
What It Is: Pretty simple the sequel to Seth MacFarlane’s 2012 surprise feature the titular bear (voiced by MacFarlane) getting married, and now wanting a baby with his new wife Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth). One problem Ted firstly has no penis, and secondly isn’t legally recognized as a person. Now there isn’t anything they can do. However, on the suggestion of his thunder buddy John (Wahlberg) they seek legal council to fight for Ted’s human rights, and they find it in junior attorney Samantha L. Jackson (Seyfried) who tries to prove that Ted is an actual person and not property.
What We Think: It’s the same ole same ole from MacFarlane. By that I mean where the first Ted was a success was building a coherent narrative and going through with the whole ridiculous idea. Here MacFarlane goes back to his Family Guy roots of just throwing funny things together and seeing what sticks. That’s not a movie…that’s Saturday Night Live, or at least it used to be. There are plenty of call backs, but in the end it just seems as though the movie floats along on the reputation of the first. Let’s not get it twisted though this movie is funny at times, but it’s just that most of the storylines don’t pay off particularly the one involving Giovanni Rabisi.
Our Grade: C, This is not what I expected. In fact it’s nowhere near as good as it should be MacFarlane seems to be trending down as a director. After the failure (and poor quality) of last years A Million Ways to Die in the West this is not much better and it’s certainly not where anyones watching this is would be right now. It brings the funny in spades, but it’s all for nought as MacFarlane gives us a cookie-cutter ending. I would recommend this for any one who REALLY enjoyed the first film, or anyone else who doesn’t really care for the story and is just there for some good ole fashion laughter. That can be found in spades
