Title: Spy
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Paul Feig
Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jason Statham
Runtime: 1 hr 57 mins
What It Is: Susan Cooper (McCarthy) is a top analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States. She is responsible for keeping agent Bradley Fine (Jude Law) alive. When he is tragically killed in action by possible terrorist Raina Boyanov (Byrne) this angers Susan. It’s only after we find out that Raina knows the identities of every field agent in the CIA there’s only one option. Susan has to go undercover. This does not please agent Rick Ford (Statham) who thinks he’s the one that should be doing the job based on his experience.
What We Think: This has to be the funniest movie I’ve seen all year! This is not hyperbole in the least. Not only did Statham kill it as a spy that does everything he can to get his man. There are parts where he begins to try to explain what makes him so tough. It’s here that Statham really has me dying. Melissa McCarthy once again shows she loves to work with Paul Feig, and this makes me hopefully their Ghostbusters reboot next year will match this on the funny. Everyone here is at the top of their game.
Our Grade: A-, This is the funniest mainstream comedy to come out thus far this year. There’s a few other comedies hitting this summer including Trainwreck, Masterminds and even Marvel’s Ant-Man. The big question is will any of them touch this or my favorite comedy this year so far What We Do in the Shadows. As for whether or not you should see this film it’s a resounding yes. Spy brings the funny in every way you can bring it, and it’s looks like it’s having a hell of a time doing so.
