Title: Faults
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Riley Stearns
Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Leland Orser, Chris Ellis
Runtime: 1 hr 29 mins

What It Is: Ansel Roth is a renowned scholar on the effects of cults and cult-like technology. When a family (played by Chris Ellis and Beth Grant) want to save their daughter from a cult she is involved with called Faults they seek out Roth. Being down on his luck and out of money and resources when this opportunity araises he takes it. Upon meeting Claire (Winstead) Ansel believes this to be an easy fix however he’s more then he bargained for with the twentysomething Claire.

What We Think: It’s a strange and almost comedic look into the nature of cult leaders. One in which Streans take his characters espcially Claire (played by his wife) on an interesting arc. The film contains many corners and it turns at every single one of them. This leaves the audience in the film and doesn’t let them escape, much like a disciple to it’s investigation of the subject matter. It’s a task that isn’t difficult for the film to do as the screenplay dunks you in and the performances keep you there. It has a lot to say and executes it all with a grace a subtlety beyond the films scope. I have no clue how the film did this so skillfully.

Our Grade:B+ With a great ending and strong performances throughout it’s the unpredictable nature of Faults that really connects. For what this film is it truly accomplishes, it’s a small film that isn’t trying to punch above weight and instead focuses and being the best film it can be. That’s exactly what this is a good film and one truly worth your time.
