Title: Camp X-Ray
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Peter Sattler
Starring: Kristen Stewart, Peyman Moadi, Lane Garrison
Runtime: 1 hr 57 mins
What It Is: A young woman (Kristen Stewart) is new to the military, and her first assignment is as a guard at Guantanamo Bay. The young soldier must deal with both the issues that revolve around dealing with guys in Guantanamo Bay responsible for heinous and unthinkable things. In addition their strong belief in Islam (which if they’re in Gitmo means it’s borderline extremist)feel a certain way in regards to woman. It’ll be a challenge, one we’re privy to finding out if she’s up too. Along the way she’ll have to deal with Ali (Moadi) who will make her life increasingly harder.
What We Think: Very surprised by the performance of Stewart here who I’ve never been particularly fond of. She’s been one note in almost all of her performances and I’ve only enjoyed one (her 2010 turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways) but in this film she’s given a great character and allowed to make it her own. There’s something behind her eyes, and we’re not permitted to that information. She’s guarded, mysterious and Stewart plays all of that up excellently.
Our Grade: B-,Solid product, a gritty camera, and a little bit of mud in your eye make Camp X-Ray an interesting project for Stewart and hopefully a gateway to more projects like it. Sattler really did a great job here and his next project should be a good one. Kudos to Peyman Moadi who North American’s last saw in the Oscar winning foreign film A Seperation, which if you have not seen is an absolute masterpiece.
