Title: My Man is a Loser
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Mike Young
Starring: Bryan Callen, Michael Rapaport, John Stamos
Runtime: 1 hr 35 mins
What It Is: Marty and Paul have lost their way. In their lives and more accurately in their marriages. Their wives just aren’t interested in them, and they don’t exactly listen nor show any measure of attention to them. Luckily these dudes have someone who can help them with this. You see Paul’s brother-in-law Mike is a playboy, but he seems to know a thing or two about how to treat a woman the way they want to be treated.
What We Think: Sure it’s cliche riddled but for some reason beneath that bevy of cliches I found a heart in there. One with perhaps a over-reliance of smutty, low-rent sex jokes. If not for that this film would’ve been a lot better. Sadly director Young isn’t sure what to do with it’s pretty awesome, and easy situation. Stamos is the best part of this. He’s all swagger wrapped in an Uncle Joey sandwich of Grecian handsomeness. His quickness with the wit and wisdom he drops on these hapless saps is a really cool dynamic for an otherwise flat, and unoriginal piece of cinema.
Our Grade: C-, You almost wish it hadn’t gotten to the point it was at. It feels as if Young let all the heart deflate itself. He sold it out for cheap jokes, and needless pillow talk. I think Young has a future as a comedic director, and perhaps his next feature will show a more subtle hand. Unfortunately his finger prints are all over this, and they’ve smeared everything into a giant mess. It’s okay though, because if you need something to entertain for 90 or so minutes this’ll sorta do it.
