Title: X-Men: Days of Future Past
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Bryan Singer
Starring: Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Hugh Jackman
Runtime: 2 hrs 11 minsWhat It Is: War riddles the world and the mutant population is being annihilated by the Sentinels, robots who can manipulate their powers to destroy mutants. The only hope left for the mutants is to go back in time and rearrange the events of the past to assist in changing the future. Using Kitty Pryde’s phasing ability on a mutant allows them to travel back in time subconsciously. But it requires absolute concentration on Kitty’s part, and her subject must have a high threshold for pain. Only Wolverine can go back of the available choices. They’ve sent him back to try and change their future by altering the past, but will the mutants still be eliminated, or will they survive to live another day.
What We Think: A friend of mine said it best “This is what a blockbuster should be”. Whether the film is dazzling you with it’s special effects, or it’s gravitas everything hits. The acting is spot on, the effects look great, the feel of the seventies is there, and makes you pine for the days of polyester and disco. Peter Dinklage as Bolivar Trask isn’t so much a bad guy as much as he is the resident racist, and the race he hates is anyone with the mutant X gene.
Our Grade: A+, This is truly the best film of the summer thus far, and I’d be hard pressed to think of another film that can top this. It has moments of subtle comedy, the dramatic weight is there without being soapish, and lastly the action spots. I haven’t seen as effect use of bullet time in a film since the Matrix, and when you see the film you’ll know what I mean. Another great thing about this film was a character I thought I would hate…Quicksilver ends up being one of my favorite characters, we need more of him, luckily he’s scheduled to appear in the upcoming sequel X-Men: Age of Apocalypse. Go see this damn movie you’ll thank yourself for it!
