Title: Locke
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Steven Knight
Starring: Tom Hardy
Runtime: 1 hr 25 mins

What It Is: Ivan Locke is just 9 hours away from not only the biggest job of his life, but one unexpected call throws everything into a looping mess. As we see the events of his life unfold we see Locke creeping ever towards something different then the man we originally meet at the films beginning. This is a very interesting film in that we only ever see one actor on screen the entire film. All his dialogue throughout is performed through Locke’s Bluetooth which is connected to his cars stereo. As this night unfolds were unsure if Locke is holding onto his sanity, and my have just been on the edge of mania.

What We Think: Tom Hardy holds the screen the full 85 minutes and it really is a testament to his immense talent. He plays Locke as a man unsure of where his life is headed after the events of this night. There are many conversations going on and all the while you are on the edge of your seat, tension building to it’s dramatic crescendo. I think it roars throughout but leaves one on a whimper. We don’t get that satisfying ending we hope for, but I’ll be honest I love that. Often times it seems like films feel the need to give the audience a logical happy ending.

Our Grade: B-, I cannot in good conscience give this film an A+, not that the slight hand of Knight, coupled with Hardy flexing every acting muscle is not an excellent combination, instead it’s because it lacks the mass appeal. A majority of the audience during our screening walked out because they didn’t want to watch a movie that “took place in a car with some dude for over an hour” I’m paraphrasing of course. Those who stuck around were treated to an absolutely gripping film even if it does take place solely within a black BMW.
