Fifty Films You Haven’t Seen, But Should

Sometimes we watch a great film and we want to share it with all our friends, well friends I have fifty for you here! Fifty films you may not have seen yet, but you should. They run the gambit of decades, genres, and narratives! These are the films after which you’ll feel cool talking to your friends about, wanting them to share in this joke, or secret however you view the film. In some cases the film was just too obscure, or understated. Others just failed for some reason or another either way, they’re on our list! So enjoy!

Title: Rubber
Year: 2011
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Quentin Dupieux
Starring: Robert the Tire, Stephen Spinella, Jack Plotnick
Why you’ll Love It! It’s about a telepathic tire for starters. This one goes in the books as an episode of The Twilight Zone that never happened…but should’ve! “Robert” which is the tires name can destroy things without even moving.  It’s a bloody good time, that doesn’t make the mistake of taking itself too seriously. You may ask what the purpose of this premise is, and as you’ll find out…NO REASON. This film is currently available through Netflix Instant.

Title: Garden State
Year: 2004
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Zach Braff
Starring: Zach Braff, Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard
Why you’ll Love It! With quirky scenes like the one above Garden State has a charm all its own.  Braff’s subtle hand in direction coupled with top performances from Portman and Sarsgaard will have you loving the cast and hoping everything works out as it should. It also doesn’t hurt that the film has a Grammy winning soundtrack as well as a Pre-Big Bang Theory appearance from Jim Parsons.

Title: Trust
Year: 2011
MPAA Rating: R
Director: David Schwimmer (Yes THAT David Schwimmer)
Starring: Clive Owen, Catherine Keener, Liana Liberato
Why you’ll Love It!: To be frank I’m not sure you will, but in the truth it’s a film that in our digital age shines light on a sobering fact. That no matter how hard we try our children are never truly safe from the unknown that is the internet. It also features some of Clive Owens best work, along with a breakout debut from then 15 year old Liana Liberato. Try not to squirm while we witness innocence stolen, and feel Annie’s discomfort.

Title: Jeff, Who Lives at Home
Year: 2012
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Jay & Mark Duplass
Starring: Jason Segal, Ed Helms, Susan Sarandon
Why you’ll Love It!: Segal, and Helms as brothers whose lives are very much different lives.  And as I said in our review it brings the big budget laughs and the indie charm, as we see that these two guys may not be living their lives as differently as we originally imagined. A great altogether cast summarizes what was one of my ten best of 2012, and a film many missed on. Jeff, Who Lives at Home is available now on Netflix Instant.

Title: Punch-Drunk Love
Year: 2002
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Starring: Adam Sandler, Emily Watson, Philip Seymour Hoffman
Why you’ll Love It!: Sandler takes on a dramatic role, and aces his first exam. It’s a romantic comedy with just that subtle quirk, and emotional pull. Romantic comedies on the whole are normally a formulaic experience of boy meets girls they fall in love crazy stuff happens the end. Punch Drunk Love takes all those necessary elements, and throws a cog into them. Sandler’s Barry Egan character is that cog, and his bipolar personality the wheel turning all the madness. Let’s not even mention it’s a gorgeously shot film whose cinematography is unmatched by any other RomCom to date. Punch Drunk Love is available now on Netflix Instant

Title: The Last Man on Earth
Year: 1964
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Ubaldo Ragona
Starring: Vincent Price, Franca Bettoja, Emma Danieli
Why you’ll Love It!: It’s Vincent Price taking a turn as a modern Van Helsing. Price, mostly known as the guy who created Edward Scissorhands in Burton’s modern classic or as the creepy voice behind Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, but before either of those came The Last Man on Earth. This film put Price in a pre-Walking Dead Rick Grimes form as he must save the world from epidemic.

Title: Mr. Nobody
Year: 2013
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director:  Jaco VonDormael
Starring: Jared Leto, Diane Kruger, Sarah Polley
Why You’ll Love It!: It takes the concept of karma to its max. 117 year old Nemo takes a look back at his life, and ponders what he considers his most important moment, when at the age of nine his parents split, and he stood on a train station having to choose, he ponders what the ramifications of either choice, leading us on two very different stories.

Title: Once
Year: 2007
MPAA Rating: R
Director: John Carney
Starring: Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova
Why You’ll Love It!: It’s the new standard on how to write both a musical, and a love story. With sweeping songs of longing to go with a beautiful story of two strangers whose love for music is only conquered by their affections for one and other. It shows us that a romantic movie doesn’t not have to consist of a formula of boy meets girl, they fall in love, have sex, and comedy ensues. Instead Hansard’s unnamed Busker, and Irglova’s “girl”character set to rewrite cinematic rules, all the while playing gorgeous Oscar winning music.

Title: The Lookout
Year: 2007
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Scott Frank
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeff Daniels, Matthew Goode
Why You’ll Love It!:It’s a thrill ride from the get-go as JGL puts down a great performance as Chris Pratt. A man who following an accident has his hockey dreams, and his memory cut short. He’s provoked into helping former classmate Gary (Goode) into helping him with a heist, as the lookout. But things are not as they appear with Gary and his plan.

Title: Wild Tigers I Have Known
Year: 2007
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Cam Archer
Starring: Malcolm Stupf, Patrick White, Max Paradise
Why You’ll Love It!: It’s a unique take on the coming of age story. It deals not only with the isolation one can feel growing up, and being awkward, but it takes head on the struggles of a adolescent whose body they feel is not the correct gender. Equally stunning in its bluntness when dealing with a difficult issue is its gorgeous cinematography, this is how an indie film should be shot. Archer’s hand is easy, and he allows the actors and script to direct them, it seems at times all Archer had to do was shout “cut”,and “print”.

Title: Mean Creek
Year: 2004
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Jacob Estes
Starring: Rory Culkin, Ryan Kelley, Scott Mechlowicz
Why You’ll Love It!: It’s a haunting modern variation of“Stand By Me” which takes a group of oft picked on young folks who have had enough. They decide to take vengeance on their tormentor, and what occurs will leave your jaw dropped, and it probably won’t be leaving the floor until the credits roll. Brilliant performance by  a mostly very young cast astound the audience, and show you that child actors can do more than just Disney fodder, and cutesy scripts.

Title: The Wackness
Year: 2008
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Jonathan Levine
Starring: Ben Kingsley, Josh Peck, Olivia Thirlby
Why You’ll Love It!: The early nineties setting is perfectly recreated, the gangster rap that permeated 90’s New York supplies a wonderful backdrop for our pot selling protagonist Luke (Peck) who is going through therapy from one of his clients (played wonderfully by Kingsley) all the while he is falling for the doctors daughters (Thirlby), as well as trying to keep his family afloat. Also be on the lookout for appearance from Mary-Kate Olsen, in a role that’s sure to shatters our image of the little from Full House.

Title: Lovely, Still
Year: 2010
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Nicholas Fackler
Starring: Martin Landau, Ellen Burstyn, Adam Scott
Why You’ll Love It!: Landau plays his role as lonely octogenarian Robert Malone with enough melancholy to break your heart. As a old man whose life seems to be going nowhere fast Malone soon falls for the woman across the road Mary, soon he realizes she’s what he’s been missing. If Landau’s performance breaks your heart, Fackler’s ending will make it whole again. Watch with the woman in your life, and be prepared for some water works in this brilliantly acted, and even more brilliantly choreographed film.

Title: Take Shelter
Year: 2011
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Jeff Nichols, Jeffrey Nicholson
Starring: MichaelShannon, Jessica Chastain, Tova Stewart
Why You’ll Love It!: Curtis (Shannon) is just like any man.Striving to make ends meet, to support his wife, and the needs of his six-year old daughter Hannah who is deaf. Curtis begins to suffer from nightmares centered on an impending storm, one that resembles the apocalypse. It consumes him; he begins to build a shelter in preparation for the looming demise illustrated in his subconscious. His mania could cost him everything, as he puts finishing the shelter above all. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable thrill-ride whose ending will leave you satisfied and begging for more.

Title: City lsland
Year: 2010
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Raymond De Felitta
Starring: Andy Garcia, Julianna Marguiles, Alan Arkin
Why You’ll Love It!: Who doesn’t love a dysfunctional family. And the elements of this one are truly intriguing. We have head of household Vince Rizzo (Garcia)a prison guard whose always wanted to be more(namely he wanted to be Marlon Brando) his wife is preoccupied with new hired hand Tony, and figuring out his story. As the narrative unfolds we uncover secrets about everyone in the family.

Title: Safety Not Guaranteed
Year: 2012
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Colin Trevarrow
Starring: Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass, Jake M. Johnson
Why You’ll Love It!: With its quirky fun, and funny script it is just a great time. From the way Duplass plays loner Kenneth to Plaza’s penchant for snarky side of the mouth wit as Darius. Trevarrow takes really interesting concepts and really puts a visual spin on it while the actors give a real heart to the material that seems far too hard to believe.  Safety Not Guaranteed is now available instantly on Netflix.

Title: Dredd
Year: 2012
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Pete Travis
Starring: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey
Why You’ll Love It!: Second time’s the charm for Hollywood as they got the kitsch, and violence of the comic books, all the while not pretending to be anything it isn’t (much unlike Sly Stallone’s 1995 disaster.)Urban feels almost robotic, and that’s a good thing as Dredd is suppose to be the epitome of what a judge should be. Enjoy this one but put the kids to bed first.

Title: Stoker
Year: 2013
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Park Chan-Wook
Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode
Why You’ll Love It!: It’s creepy,  eerie and it makes you grateful your family is nowhere near this twisted. India (Wasikowska) in particular makes for a ball of crazy with her pseudo psycho personality. Meanwhile her emotionally unstable mother Evelyn (Kidman) will show you precisely why India turned out the way she did. Stoker will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray on June 18, 2013.

Title: The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T
Year: 1953
MPAA Rating: G
Director: Roy Rowland
Starring: Hans Conried, Tommy Rettig, Peter Lind Hayes
Why You’ll Love It!: It’s a kid friendly musical that features cinematography that’ll remind us of Alice in Wonderland. Dr. T is also the only Seuss film to actually feature Ted Geisel on set. Geisel designed, and of course wrote this musical fantasy that is the creation of young Bart. Though the film turns 60 years old  on July 1st it is one that bombed initially, and that was due to it being far ahead of its time.

Title: The Freebie
Year: 2010
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Katie Aselton
Starring: Katie Aselton, Dax Shepard, Sean Nelson
Why You’ll Love It!: As Annie and Darren Shepard, and Aselton show the razor’s edge that is love. They start out as a couple totally in love, but disgusted by the thought of MAKING love with one and other. Aselton’s feminine bravado leads her direction, and in this case keeps the film from being overly raucous. It seems though that Asleton may have pulled a few cards from her real life husband Mark Duplass, as they indie subtleties found in his films are evident throughout. That sort of production quality lend to the belief in our characters.

Title: Snow Angels
Year: 2007
MPAA Rating: R
Director: David Gordon Green
Starring: Kate Beckinsale, Sam Rockwell, Olivia Thirlby
Why You’ll Love It!: Green (All the Real Girls, Pineapple Express) writes and directs an adaptation of Stewart O’Nan’s novel that features several moving parts all of which collide upon the denouement leaving the audience floored. With rich performance from the entirety of the cast including its young leads Michael Angarano, and Olivia Thirlby. Beckinsale’s turn as Annie will break your heart all the while Rockwell’s Glenn showcases the actors signature chameleon like ability.

Title: This Film Is Not Yet Rated
Year: 2006
MPAA Rating: NC-17
Director: Kirby Dick
Starring: Hollywood, the Motion Picture Association of America
Why You’ll Love It!: Documentarian Kirby Dick takes on the most powerful force in cinema the Motion Picture Association of America. You know those guys that give a letter rating to every film released in American cinemas. It gives an outlook on the hypocritical double standards placed on sex over violence and language. The film also gives us a gander into the broken system that has only recently adjusted its standards for today’s modern audience since its inception in the 1970’s.

Title: Bubba Ho-Tep
Year: 2003
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Don Coscarelli
Starring: Bruce Campbell, Ossie Davis, Ella Joyce
Why You’ll Love It!: It’s like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest but with murder, soul-suckers and stuff. I really don’t think I need say much else, but for the sake of this article I will. Bruce Campbell is and forever will rule! Here he’s an aging Elvis Impersonator, who helps out a fellow mental patient  who seems to believe he IS JFK. No I’m not making that up, watch the movie!

Title: Chuck & Buck
Year: 2000
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Miguel Arteta
Starring: Mike White, Chris Weitz, Lupe Ontiveros
Why You’ll Love It!: Let me start by saying that watching this one on DVD or Blu-Ray won’t make a difference as the entire film was shot on a personal camcorder. One of the first films to shoot entirely in this medium, and what becomes of it is a strangely bitter Dramedy that’s is as dark and intriguing as it is funny. It’ll not only tickle you’re funny bone but make you hope that that is the only thing that got touched.

Title: Happy Accidents
Year: 2001
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Brad Anderson
Starring: Vincent D’Onofrio, Marisa Tomei
Why You’ll Love It!: Ruby (Tomei) is a gal who doesn’t have great luck with the opposite sex, in fact her current beau might JUST be crazy! D’Onofrio plays Sam to a perfect pitch, and these two have absolutely great chemistry. You might not fully buy into what Sam is selling here, but even at a half pitch you can’t help but believe the guy. It might be one of the quirkier set-ups in RomCom  history, but it’s originality is something that tepid genre truly needs.

Title: Idiocracy
Year: 2006
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Mike Judge
Starring: Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepard
Why You’ll Love It!: It’s self-deprecation as only Mike Judge can do it. This is the man who satirized wasted youth with his Beavis & Butthead characters, and also took on the mundane existence of cubicle life (Office Space). All while showing us exactly why we love his brand of humor, and his flair for the quiet comedy. This film might just be one of your new favorites.

Title: Moon
Year: 2009
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Duncan Jones
Starring: Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey (Voice),
Why You’ll Love It!: While the thought of a film about a guy stuck in a space-station on the moon sounds as exciting as a root canal, it’s quite the contrary. Spacey voicing GERTY, and the thrills that ensue from Sam Bell’s apparent psychosis make for a compelling thriller with a simple premise. It did what 127 Hours did, before 127 Hours did it. Perhaps this was where Danny Boyle sought advice on how to shoot a film in a similar fashion.

Title: Perfect Blue
Year: 1999
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Satoshi Kon
Starring: The Vocal Talents of: Junko Iwao, Rika Matsumoto
Why You’ll Love It!: Take everything you know about psychological thrillers, turn it on it’s head, and add some sparkling Japanese animation. Perfect Blue tells us a story many tend to overlook. Mima Kirigoe is an ex-pop star who is trying her hand at being a top actress on the silver screen, however she’s haunted by a website (run by an obsessed fan) that seemingly tracks her every move. Or does it? This film will have you asking questions all the way until the thrilling end.

Title: Rules of Attraction
Year: 2002
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Roger Avary
Starring: James Van Der Beek, Shannyn Sossamon, Jessica Biel
Why You’ll Love It!: It was a coming out party for two of the nineties squeaky clean teen actors. Van Der Beek ( Dawson’s Creek) and Biel (Seventh Heaven)shed their previous image, and a few layers of clothing to tell this story of love, sex, and emotional instability all with a blaring realism that seemed to lack in the late-90’s early-00 teen movies. While it is plagued by vague caricatures their development is never stunted by their lack of initial thought. Satire, family issues, and drugs round out the cornucopia of subjects squeezed into this interesting 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Title: Wristcutters: A Love Story
Year: 2007
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Goran Dukic
Starring: Shannyn Sossaman, Patrick Fugit, Shea Whigham
Why You’ll Love It!: Tom Waits playing a dude whose out of his freaking mind, sign me up! Fugit’s Zia is a character we like, and Sossaman’s Mikal is one we wish we didn’t. In a world full of people who have killed themselves no one can smile, and life is but a nightmare. Featuring an amazing soundtrack by gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello, and an awesome, and impressive supporting cast(considering the films size.) This one is an under-the-radar beauty that you’ll enjoy multiple times.

Title: The Swell Season
Year: 2011
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Nick August-Perna, Carlo Mirabella-Davis
Starring: Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova
Why You’ll Love It!: Having won an Academy Award for their musical fairytale (and fellow list maker) Once we get a pseudo-sequel here in The Swell Season. Taking it’s title from the band formed by the two now off-screen lovers we get a true glimpse behind the curtain. Almost as is we got to see what exactly happens after the Happily Ever After. Let’s not forget to mention the beautiful soundtrack for this film which features music from our leads as well as an appearance from Sam Beard aka Iron and Wine.

Title: Sin Nombre
Year: 2009
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Cary Fukunaga
Starring: Paulina Gaitan, Edgar Flores, Tanoch Huerta Mejia
Why You’ll Love It!: It’s brutal honest portrayal of the lengths people will go to for freedom. Next time you need a reminder that freedom isn’t free look back to the adventure Willy (Flores), and Sayra (Gaitan) go through add in the fact that the entirety of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang is after them, and you’ll get the message. While the on-screen talent is relatively unknown here in the states the star power in the producers chair are two of the biggest Hispanic movie stars currently speaking two languages in Diego Luna, and Gael Garcia Bernal. It’s gut-wrenching  and absolutely beautiful storytelling, what a Hollywood debut for Fukugana.

Title: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Year: 2008
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Mark Herman
Starring: Asa Butterfield, Vera Farmiga, David Thewilis
Why You’ll Love It!: You won’t. It’ll hurt you’re feeling, and probably make your mother, and girlfriend cry. It’s message is a simple though profound one. And while some will point to it as an oversimplification of one of humanity blackest experiences I look at it as telling a story that’s been told many times from a completely original point of view. It takes John Boyne’s novel, and makes the words all that much more poignant. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is currently available to watch on Netflix Instantly.

Title: Never Let Me Go
Year: 2010
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Mark Romanek
Starring: Kiera Knightley, Adam Garfield, Carey Mulligan
Why You’ll Love It!: Take one of the most prolific rock video director, and  give him a screenplay adapted from a book that was a world best-seller. Tear-jerking, and truly original this is a film that does so many things right, but tends to lag during the rising action.

Title: The Namesake
Year: 2006
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Mira Nair
Starring: Kal Penn, Tabu, Irfan Khan
Why You’ll Love It!: With performances that’ll leave you feeling good inside, and refreshed in the soul The Namesake takes a unique approach and does so from a place within the heart. If you’re looking for a family film that can make you smile this is a great film to look into. Kal Penn (yes that guy!) really shows a bit of range going outside his normal stoner comedy

Title: No
Year: 2013
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Pablo Larrain
Starring: Gael Garcia Bernal, Alfredo Castro, Antonia Zegers
Why You’ll Love It!: An incredible story about an incredibly understated dictator. Centered on the total takeover of the Chilean government by Augusto Pinochet. The country will either vote YES or NO to letting Pinochet into power. Bernal plays a young advertising executive hired by the NO side trying to convince Chile to vote NO to Pinochet.

Title: Me And You And Everyone We Know
Year: 2005
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Miranda July
Starring: Miranda July, John Hawkes
Why You’ll Love It!: It takes the boy meets girls story to new levels of neurosis. Hawkes and July seem awkward on screen at first, but like their protagonists in the film, they seem to grow with one and other. Throw in some obscure visual at the absolute perfect time and you have yourself a film that is out of the art house and into the fire.

Title: The Science of Sleep
Year: 2006
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Michel Gondry
Starring: Gael Garcia Bernal, Charlotte Gainsbourg
Why You’ll Love It!: Off the heels of Eternal Sunshine, and The White Stripes “Fell In Love With a Girl” video Gondry brings us this film in all it’s felt covered and yarn stitched glory. From the stunning visuals (a  Gondry hallmark) to the three languages it uses (French, English, and Spanish) this one isn’t for everybody, but those who give it a fighting chance will be pleasantly surprised.

Title: The Baxter
Year: 2005
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Michael Showalter
Starring: Michael Showalter, Elizabeth Banks, MichelleWilliams
Why You’ll Love It!: Comedian Showalter directs, and stars in this film about a man who always seems to get stepped on by the opposite sex. His Elliott Sherman is a man who just is not interesting, he’s unassuming, the type of guy you’d expect to go on a workplace rampage. Woman always seem to leave him for those men with a more saucy disposition. Pay close to Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) and his wonderful role here

Title: Premium Rush
Year: 2012
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: David Koepp
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon, Dania  Ramirez
Why You’ll Love It!: It’s a film without an adrenal gland. An urban sprawl will have you hoping to catch your breath. JGL thrills us again in a film that didn’t get the love it deserved in its theatrical run. Michael Shannon here does what Michael Shannon do and gives a stellar performance as a corrupt cop with a gambling problem. I can’t see where this movie went wrong, but even the great JGL has to fire a blank every once and a while.

Title: One Hour Photo
Year: 2002
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Mark Romanek
Starring: Robin Williams, Connie Nielsen, Michael Vartan
Why You’ll Love It!: Robin Williams stepping out of his traditional self, and into the role of Sy Parrish will have anyone paranoid about that strange guy at the photo lab. Beautifully shot, and wonderfully directed, Romanek who is known as a music video director does not present a heavy hand common with music video directors in motion pictures (Looking at you McG… or as I prefer it hAckG)

Title: Magnolia
Year: 1999
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Starring: Jason Robards, Julianne Moore, Tom Cruise
Why You’ll Love It!: One of those films where lotsa stuff happens to lotsa people and somehow everything connects. Difference here is we  get the brilliant Paul Thomas Anderson lion taming the whole enchilada. We get an unbelievable performance out of Tom Cruise, and a revivalist turn from then 76-year-old Jason Robards. It’s lengthy at three hours eight minutes, but darn it is it worth watching.

Title: The Iron Giant
Year: 1999
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Brad Bird
Starring: Eli Marienthal, Vin Diesel, Jennifer Aniston
Why You’ll Love It!: A story whose heart was too big for it’s own body. Whose imagery and PG rating scared off it’s intended audience. Those who past on animation maven Brad Bird’s debut film missed a boy and his dog story for the 21st century, perhaps that was the issue as it was released in 1999. The love between Hogarth (Marienthal) and the iron robot initially sent to eradicate humankind is wonderful, and will have even the most harden folks weeping. SUPERMAN!

Title: In Bruges
Year: 2008
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Martin McDonagh
Starring: Colin Farrell, Brenden Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes
Why You’ll Love It!: It’s about a couple a hitmen who aren’t particularly the smartest. After a hit in London the pair seek solace from everything right across the English Channel in Bruges, Belgium. It is here hilarity ensues for these guys. A completely original film that’s not like anything in any genre you pigeonhole it into. His follow-up was the also very underrated Seven Psychopaths.

Title: Fantastic Mr. Fox
Year: 2009
Director: Wes Anderson
Starring: George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzmann
Why You’ll Love It!: It mixes the King of the Understated Indie Wes Anderson, stop motion animation, and a story by Roald Dahl (Charlie& The Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach). It these very same things that probably caused this film to fall by the way side. It’s smart enough for adult while being enjoyable for those of smaller stature as well. Plus LOOK AT THAT CAST!

Title: Burn After Reading
Year: 2008
Director: Coen Brothers
Starring: John Malkovich, Brad Pitt, Tilda Swenson
Why You’ll Love It!: As is standard with the Coen’s therewacky mania ensuing left and right. You never know what freaking direction this films going to go, and that’s the absolute fun of it. Whether its our dumb and dumber gym employees, John Malkovich going ape shit crazy, or George Clooney being Clooney, the Coen’s let all the fun flow through this interesting take on espionage that’s equal parts hilarious, and insane.

Title: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Year: 1993
Director: Eric Radomski, Bruce W. Timm
Starring: Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Stacy Keach
Why You’ll Love It!: It’s Batman! But it’s also the best Batman to come out in the nineties (yes better then Returns!) Since it’s animated most stayed away from it, however those who indulged in it got to see perhaps the best interpretation of the Dark Knight, and the best Joke until Ledger came along and not only set the bar but threw it into the atmosphere.  Here we have Batman worrying about more than just Hamill’s Joker, but a new villain of sort the Phantasm! Watch it, love it,thank me later!

Title: Frances Ha
Year: 2013
Director: Noah Baumbach
Starring: Greta Gerwig, Mickey Summer, Adam Driver
Why You’ll Love It!: Greta does, what Greta does she charming in a film where Frances has lots of things but nothing at all. Lives in New York…check, works at a dance studio…check she’s a dreamer who dreams because she has nothing. No apartment, she not an actual dancer she loves morethen shes loved, and wants more then she has. We really could’ve put the lot ofwork by Baumbach here and it would’ve fit in perfectly.

Title: Mud
Year: 2013
Director: Jeff Nichols
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Reese Witherspoon
Why You’ll Love It!: Two young men Ellis and Neckbone find a man on an island in Mississippi. This man comes equipped with radical tales of a gorgeous woman, vengeful bounty hunters, and a story of a man he once killed. This is the best movie of 2013 that no one saw. McConaughey is getting praise for his role in Dallas Buyer’s Club but any cinephile worth his metal will tell you this is their favorite performance of his this year. Sit back and watch this great film, with it’s two young stars sure to be even more excellent in the future
