Title: Take Me Home Tonight
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Michael Dowse
Starring: Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler
Runtime: 1 hr 54 mins
What It Is? Matt Franklin (Grace) for all his strong points, like his intelligence, which got him a degree at MIT, his wit, which is prevalent when he talks to his twin sister Wendy (Faris). However for each of his strengths there’s a weakness that’s kept him from living a better life. You see despite his intelligence he still works at the local video store in the mall, and for all his wit Matt has never been able to talk to his High School crush Tori Frederking (Teresa Palmer). Sadly though Matt’s biggest weak point might be his best friend Barry (Fogler) who despite his lack of wit, intelligence, or apparent common sense makes up for this by displaying all the worst personality traits as well. Tonight is the night where Wendy’s boyfriend and former big man on campus Kyle Masterson throws his big Labor Day end of summer bonanza. It is here where Matt intends to finally talk to Tori, even if he has to lie about his occupation, and do things he normally wouldn’t
What We Think? While I’m normally all for an underdog this is one dog who could use a few new tricks. The script is flat, and predictable. Nothing about Dowse’ direction suggests he did anything more then yell “ACTION” and “CUT” maybe print a few times also. In addition none, and I mean NONE of the characters are likable, not even Grace’s Matt makes you feel anything but sorry for his indecisive nature. Especially knowing that even though his character is the smartest guy in the room he’s also the wishiest and the washiest. For a more glaring example in terrible characters and the equally annoying actors who play them look directly at Dan Fogler, who is and always will be annoying. I mean from Fanboys, to the terrible Good Luck Chuck his characters are never really different, but always irritating.
Our Grade: C-, If this film was remotely as good as it’s soundtrack, which is why this isn’t a D, or even failing grade, then this COULD’VE been one of the best pseudo-80’s comedies we’ve seen since John Cusack went Hot Tubbing in a Time Machine. Instead it’s a lame raunch-fest full of unfunny jokes, and low brow stupidity. Do yourself a favor and don’t watch movies involving Dan Fogler. And for that matter if you happen to start watching one rinse all orifices’ with warm water, if that fails call the poison control hotline.
