Title: I Want You Back
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Jason Orley
Starring: Charlie Day, Jenny Slate, Gina Rodriguez
Runtime: 1 hr 56 mins

What It Is: Emma (Slate) has just been dumped by her boyfriend Noah (Scott Eastwood). Peter (Day) has also been relieved of his boyfriend duties by his long-time partner Anne (Rodriguez). When Emma and Peter, who work for different companies in the same building meet and begin to explain their stories. When they realized that, of course, the most obvious thing to do here is to seek revenge by breaking them apart from their new partners since the two are certain their former beaus are the ones for them. But will this plan work? Or will unseen circumstances change everything?

What We Think: What a lovely film. The synopsis does not properly give you the feeling the actual film does. There’s fantastic chemistry between not just the supposed couples, but amongst the cast as a whole. The biggest thing for me with this was the writing. Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger have written here a smart, witty, and heartfelt look at the modern romance gone wrong. It analyzes the toxicity that can occur in relationships from a variety of angles. Though it never villainizes any of the cast. At least from my perspective. Among the most important things for a romantic comedy is that it fills the latter qualification. This film is really funny so check off that box.

Our Grade: B+, Let me just say that this film is both a welcomed surprise and sort of an expectation as of late. There have been a TON of great “RomComs” hitting the streaming services. This bad boy is certainly chief amongst them. Considering myself somewhat of a connoisseur of such things I can say that with some semblance of authority. I think audiences will love it so if you haven’t checked this one out…DO IT!
