Title: Thunder Force
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Ben Falcone
Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Octavia Spencer, Jason Bateman
Runtime: 1 hr 46 mins

What It Is: Lydia (McCarthy) and Emily (Spencer) have been best friends since they were little girls. They live in a world where some people, mostly sociopaths, have been given powers. When Emily’s parents are killed by one of these super-beings she makes a vow to stop these people…for good. She dedicates her life to getting good grades and assuring that she does what it takes to be in the position to take them down. Fast forward to adulthood and she has a game plan in place…even if Lydia tries to get in the way.

What We Think: I’ve been particularly hard on the previous work Melissa McCarthy has done with her husband (writer-director-actor) Ben Falcone. That’s not changing with this project. While it is leaps and bounds better than both Tammy and The Boss it’s a step-down, slightly from Superintelligence. All the typical actors from these sorts of films are there. It’s too bad the scripting is also in typical fashion…bad. All things considered, Octavia Spencer, who is amazingly talented, deserves better than the last two projects she’s been in. Between this and The Witches she’s putting herself in films that she’s too good for.

Our Grade: D+, For having a couple of jokes that hit it isn’t a complete failure, but those jokes hit in spite of the script, not because of it. Do not BY ANY MEANS watch this film. It lacks any semblance of fun or comedy. Dragging Pom Klementieff into all this. How dare you. Obviously, this film needed someone to say SOMETHING. Instead, Falcone was left unattended yet again and this is the result. Also Jason Bateman with lobster hands wtf? Is that suppose to be funny because it really didn’t work.
