Title: Judy & Punch
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Mirrah Foulkes
Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Damon Herriman, Benedict Hardie
Runtime: 1 hr 45 mins

What It Is: Punch (Herriman) is the greatest puppeteer of his time. His puppet show brings in massive audiences but his alcoholism (from which he is recovering) and general bad attitude have cost him a shot at the big time. This attitude manifests itself in his attitude towards his lovely wife Judy (Wasikowska) which is less than stellar. The town they live in Seaside, which is nowhere near the sea, is run by an incompetent constable. This has led to the town being under almost mob rule.

What We Think: Mia Wasikowska is once again fantastic here. As is to be expected with her. Damon Herriman is a great villain and overall this is a fun film. I think the most enjoyable part is the script. It’s so off the wall and fun and the entire time you’re trying to catch these stupid little jokes everywhere. If you’re able to catch them they really elevate this. Visually it has a grungy look that fits the setting. Overall there’s a lot to like, especially the underlying themes of these trials by posse feelings that are sometimes prevalent in today’s social media-centered world.

Our Grade: B+, Honestly this is one I was sad to miss at Sundance in 2019 and after seeing it I’d certainly give this a recommendation. It’s a weird and fun little parody of many things while simultaneously having a message about things that are problematic in any society. It does an amazing job of balancing all this while being really funny. This particular film isn’t easy to find but SHOULD be available on whatever VOD you prefer. That said check it out and you certainly won’t be disappointed in it.
