Title: High Life
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Claire Denis
Starring: Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Mia Goth
Runtime: 1 hr 53 mins

What It Is: Inmates on death row are taken on an interstellar ride where they must mission into a black hole and figure out its contents. As a doctor who murdered her children (Binoche) attempts to create the first child bore in space. As both the tensions and the body count rises the lonely and silent Monte (Pattinson) is left to pick up the pieces and deal with the consequences of the actions taken on that suicide ship to space.

What We Think: Claire Denis’ first foray into science fiction proves that Robert Pattinson is just an incredible actor. He says more with less than most actors can with some of the finest dialogue. Often the film wanders. To some extent that is to the detriment of the film itself. Absolutely gorgeous in its cinematography that’s to be expected from Denis given her history in the medium. Mia Goth is so subtle in her performance and it’s a great one. Jessie Ross is responsible for handling the teenaged Willow and though she isn’t in a ton of the film she’s wonderful.

Our Grade: B, So for my money, this is an absolute treat. For those that want a bit of intelligence with there sci-fi, this is it. For those haters of Pattinson that somehow missed him in The Rover or Good Time well here’s your chance. Your chance to see that this dude is legit. See this film. It was a true surprise for me. It isn’t for everyone. To that, I have to be frank. Those that aren’t fans of more deliberate pacing won’t enjoy this. But if you’re into it this is a true treat. Check it out for sure if you haven’t.
