Title: Long Shot
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Jonathan Levine
Starring: Charlize Theron, Seth Rogen, June Diane Raphael
Runtime: 2 hrs 5 mins

What It Is: Charlotte Field (Theron) is the current Secretary of State under President Chambers (Bob Odenkirk) a former television actor…who played the President. He’s also essentially a pawn for media mogul Parker Wembley (Andy Serkis). When Chambers taps Charlotte as the next person he wants to endorse for president…she needs a little help. Her image is quite…cold. When she runs into elementary school acquaintance Fred Flarsky (Rogen) she hires him to write some speeches with a funny side. You see Fred is a journalist known for his hilarious (but also very serious) takes on the world.

What We Think: This is the funniest film I’ve seen in quite some time. Rogen and Theron have excellent chemistry that despite everything totally works. Often times with romantic comedies, and make no mistake this IS A ROMANTIC COMEDY, the weird little guy will get the gorgeous girl. This is somewhat similar in that trope. I enjoyed this film more then I suspected I would. Andy Serkis is unrecognizable in this one. There are jokes that hit, and they’re spaced out so that you don’t miss anything. That’s just good writing. That is the strength of this film…the writing. Notwithstanding Charlize Theron is awesome in this!

Our Grade: B+, When all cylinders are going this is the years funniest film. What makes this a great film altogether is when it takes its foot off the gas and offers several moments of existentialism and the world around us. I say that completely seriously. See this film. Like you don’t have to, but you’ll be missing out on an excellent film. One that’ll have you in stitches. Not because it’ll injure you…you might just tear something laughing so hard. I do caution IT IS GRAPHIC…and unforgiving.
