Title: Romantic Comedy
MPAA Rating: Not Yet Rated
Director: Elizabeth Sankey
Starring: Jessica Barden, Cameron Cook, Anne T. Donahue
Runtime: 1 hr 18 mins

What It Is: This documentary is a love letter to those films that make us weak in the knees. The films that though they’re plagued with bad tropes give us a hope that we too can find our Prince Charming or Manic Pixie Dream Girl. The romantic comedy. It’s a genre that has seen it’s ups and downs. One that has meant many things to many people. Some of those people are featured here and speak about the things this genre does well…and where it can improve.

What We Think: I loved this documentary but I feel like that makes complete sense for anyone who knows me. Not only is it a sort of look back at the history of the genre it’s done so lovingly. Sure at times, a tongue is planted firmly in cheek. From cinematic beginnings to a money maker in the late 90’s to it’s perceived evolution in the modern time. I like what was done here. I mean sure it isn’t a serious documentary that speaks to some societal need for change. It isn’t some biographical piece on someone important to history. No, instead it knows what it’s trying to say. It says it and it gets out of there in a crisp cool 78 minutes.

Our Grade: A-, With documentaries, there are a ton of things to enjoy here and if you get a chance to check it out do so! As of the writing of this article, it has no release schedule but I venture to assume it’ll be day and date for those that don’t live in places like Los Angeles, New York or probably in this case Austin. Check it out…seriously!
