Title: IO
MPAA Rating: TV-14
Director: Jonathan Helpert
Starring: Margaret Qualley, Anthony Mackie, Danny Huston
Runtime: 1 hr 36 mins

What It Is: Sam (Qualley) is a young scientist on a station attempting to save a dying Earth. When she meets Micah (Mackie) a man trying to catch the last shuttle off the planet the two form an unlikely bond as Sam tries to help her father save the home humans have had for a few million years. As she collects the samples and does the work a revelation will shake the plans she has to its core.

What We Think: This might be one of the most bore-inducing films I’ve ever seen. Nothing in this film could wake me up from the coma it induced. What was Netflix thinking here? Margaret Qualley seems a capable actress but is given absolutely NOTHING to work with here. Kind of like her character here. Netflix continues to be, perhaps, the most inconsistent studio around. When looking at the film it doesn’t even look good. It’s as if they just grabbed a camera, any camera and decided “yeah that’ll work”. Anthony Mackie and Danny Huston deserve better than this. It’s really just so bad.

Our Grade: D+, Lackluster throughout, this is another example of Netflix purchasing films simply to fill space. There is scant a thing to like here. If you do manage to get through the film without falling asleep you aren’t in for much of a ride. Instead of getting lost in the world of this film you instead are praying this one gets lost in space. I cannot and do not recommend this one. I can’t do it to our fantastic readers. Margaret Qualley has two films from this year’s Sundance in Native Son and Adam both of which are far far better fair than this.
