Title: The Night Eats the World
MPAA Rating: TV-14
Director: Dominique Rocher
Starring: Anders Danielsen Lie, Golshifteh Farahani, Denis Lavant
Runtime: 1 hr 33 mins

What It Is: Sam (Danielsen Lie) attends a party solely to pick up his things from his ex-girlfriends flat. When he falls asleep in the flat he awakens the next day to find that the world has changed. That everything he knew before is no longer as it was. Now, suddenly, he’s all alone. Not a person in sight. That is until Sarah (Farahani) shows up and scares the crap out of him. Now, these two might just be the last two people on Earth…just maybe.

What We Think: This is a film with several surprises up its sleeve. That alone makes it all work out just a bit better. Instead of falling into genre cliches, cliches I won’t speak on in-depth due to spoilers, but trust me as the action unfolds it becomes less and less obvious what is going to happen next. Danielsen Lie is fantastic working against almost nothing. He holds the film together wonderfully. Farahani is an actress that hasn’t disappointed me yet. Especially her role in Paterson, she’s impressive here in her limited role.I think Rocher makes some really interesting choices and narratively the film does some interesting things but never reinvents the wheel. That does lead to some pacing issues in the films second act.

Our Grade: B-, Overall an impressive piece and one that earns the recommendation I’m giving it. Check it out. I don’t think you’ll be able to figure out what happens throughout. That is both refreshing and unusual. Come for a good looking film stay for the surprises. A bit of advice: Don’t read anything else about this one before seeing it. Don’t read other reviews, they’ll spoil it.
