Title: Set It Up
MPAA Rating: TV-14
Director: Claire Scanlon
Starring: Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Lucy Liu
Runtime: 1 hr 45 mins

What It Is: Harper (Deutch) works for perhaps the most miserable woman in the world. Famous sportswriter Kirsten (Liu). Charlie (Powell) is the assistant to the impossible to deal with Rick (Taye Diggs). When these two frustrated employees devise a plan to set up the two less than happy managers. Perhaps, though, it isn’t their bosses that are gaining feelings for one and other. No, perhaps these two wannabe matchmakers have, themselves, been struck by cupids arrows.

What We Think: Straight up! This film is actually pretty good. I had NO expectations of this being anything but standard. It’s just a bit more than that. Good performances are all around and chemistry is palpable. I laughed more than I thought I would. Powell is really good here and Deutch continues a run of strong lead performances but, unlike Flower she gets to kinda be closer to what I imagine she is. Taye Diggs and Lucy Liu are really enjoyable as people who are not enjoyable. Scanlon doesn’t need to do much to assure the stories told here. Nonetheless one particular scene involving pizza shows that there’s a little room for flair in the “standard” RomCom.

Our Grade: B+, This is a film that is really easy to watch. I mean that in terms of ability to do so and how the film flows. It flows well due to the good direction and to watch…well, load up Netflix. Speaking of which, I know I’m hard on them (because most of their original films suck) but this is a step in the right direction. Along with Happy Anniversary, it seems Netflix might be the place for romantic comedies. Check this one out if you get a chance, you won’t regret it.
