Review: Kate Nash: Underestimate the Girl (Los Angeles Film Festival)

Title: Kate Nash: Underestimate the Girl
Rating: NR
Director: Amy Goldstein
Starring: Kate Nash, Linda Buratto, Emma Hughes
Runtime: 1 hr 29 mins

What It Is: A documentary that covers notable rock-pop musician and actress Kate Nash, from the start of her career on MySpace to her recent works, tours, and drama in this real look at an artist in the music industry.

What We Think: Lemme come clean: I love Kate Nash. I’ve been a fan of her music for a couple years now after discovering her whilst bumming around on iTunes and was taken by the brightness of her music and the honesty and strength of her lyrics. From her albums (such as Girl Talk) to her collaborations (her work with The Tuts being one of my favorite Christmas albums of all time), I am no stranger nor detractor to her sound and spirit. My bias put aside, this documentary has quite a lot to offer as a proof of character. A quality music doc you could find on something like Vice or MTV, Underestimate the Girl is as no BS as its star. Other than following Nash on her tours and recording sessions, we learn more of her and her journey in a patchwork of interviews and in-depth reads into her discography. It also is an importantly transparent look at the relentless abuse and dangers artists have to go through in the music business, from threats to betrayal to legal battles, it’s made clear talent like Nash is undeservedly put through the wringer. Other than slightly cheesy lyrical graphics, I couldn’t find anything else in this doc that didn’t sing untrue or unsophisticated. Good camerawork, good pacing, and wonderful personality.

Our Grade: B, Kate Nash is soulful to watch. Our journey with her through the drama and setbacks makes for a sympathetic, fun ride that left me feeling as loving, sunny, and pissed-off as the complimentary music (provided by good ole’ Nash). If you’re a fan like me, this doc is definitely for you. If you’re new to Nash, this is the perfect introduction to her music, who she is, and what she stands for.
