Title: Like Father
Rating: MA
Director: Lauren Miller Rogen
Starring: Kristen Bell, Kelsey Grammer, Seth Rogen
Runtime: 1 hr 38 min

What It Is: She’s left at the altar and her no good absent father shows up too? Rachel (Bell) finds herself struggling to let loose on her honeymoon turned vacation to the Caribbean.

What We Think: Kristen Bell is so cute. She’s a great actress and plays both the uptight workaholic and come to Jesus moments so well. Jesus doesn’t show up in this film, but I do think there is the social commentary to be made on the workaholic woman who gets left at the alter because she can’t stop putting work before “happily ever after”. Nonetheless, this film is funny, heartwarming, and feel good. And granted the director, Lauren Miller Rogen is Seth Rogen’s wife, he surprisingly didn’t play a major role. Instead, the focus of this film was a wistful daddy-daughter moment without being weird about it. Bell really carried this film and I would absolutely categorize this as a film with a strong female lead character. Love didn’t quite work out for her but that didn’t stop her from having a good time. She needed a different male-female relationship in her life on her own terms. Like Father is really funny, I think I even laughed out loud a couple of times. It also managed to pack in the diversity with a gay couple, an elderly couple, and a Black couple, all funny and admirable in their own ways.

Our Grade: A, Please watch this film. There is a steady character development. I feel like a lot of feel-good Netflix films are abrupt with their character development. My favorite part of this film is watching Rachel momentarily revert back to her walled-off workaholic self after all the progress she’s made. I think that’s what really makes this film, is the character development. Don’t forget to add it to your watchlist!
