Title: Coco
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Lee Unkrich, Adrian Molina
Starring: Anthony GonzalezGael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt
Runtime: 1 hr 45 mins

What It Is: Young Miguel (Gonzalez) wants to be a musician. There’s only one problem his family, who are zapateros (shoemakers) and have been for a few generations now. This all started when the matriarch Mama Imelda (Alanna Ubach) proclaimed her family would no longer listen to music following her musician husband leaving behind his family.

What We Think: What an absolutely incredible piece of animated cinema! This film is equal parts emotionally powerful and narratively sound. The story goes place you expect sometimes and other times it goes another direction. Young Anthony Gonzalez really makes Miguel a fantastic character. Gael Garcia Bernal continues to be one of my favorite actors. He is fantastic here. “Remember Me” is memorable and far FAR less irritating than most Disney/Pixar fare. I cannot in good conscience not mention how amazing it was as a Latino to see that culture so prevalent in a major motion picture by the biggest animation studio in the world. The Book of Life hit on similar themes and is likewise an incredible feature. Check it out if you loved this film. Also, mark it down as THE film that made me cry like a small child.

Our Grade: A+, There was no doubt walking out of this theatre this film was getting an A+. I am in no way ashamed and am instead ridiculously proud of this production. I certainly intend to check this film en Espanol as well. I mean Marc Antonio Solis as Ernesto de la Cruz sounds pretty sweet to me. I am absolutely going to recommend this film to everyone! Don’t be afraid to do a rewatch in Spanish either. This film more than deserves your money twice! Here’s a snippet of Gael at work in Spanish
