What It Is: Clowntergeist is a new indie horror flick about a college student who is terrified of clowns. When an evil spirit possesses the body of a clown and begins to terrorize people in town, the young college student must face her fears and find a way to stop the horror.

What We Think: Having no idea what I was getting into with this movie other than that it involved clowns and ghosts, which is creepy enough on its own, I can say after having watched it that it is not as scary as you’d think. The movie suffers from an abundance of horror movie clichès, and plays itself way too safe. The scares are predictable and inspire boredom. And the acting is hilariously bad. The actors and actresses seemed not to care one bit about their characters, and every line of dialogue felt so forced and awkward that I can say it was almost scarier than the clown. All the characters are by-the- books horror movie caricatures, and they act exactly how you’d think they’d act. The pacing of the film was decent, never was too slow, but never especially thrilling. There were some moments, even, that didn’t make any sense; for example, the main character Emma for some strange reason just goes out for a drive at 2 am in the morning for no reason. I noticed that a lot of the characters awkwardly found themselves driving at night and would see the clown. The contrivances for the sake of cheap horror were disappointing and incredibly forced. The overall concept was interesting and had potential but was poorly executed and was quite laughable.

Our Grade: D-

This movie could’ve been improved in a lot of key places; the final result is a disappointment of a horror movie. I really tried to like it, but couldn’t. I would recommend it to someone who is interested in indie horror movies, but other than that it is overwhelmingly mediocre, worth one watch–maybe.
