Title: Power Rangers
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Dean Israelite
Starring: Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler
Runtime: 2 hrs 4 mins

What It Is: You know the story; when five outcast teenagers are given five power coins they are turned into the Power Rangers. There’s the leader Jason (Montgomery) a former star of the Angel Grove football team. Billy (Cyler) a nerdy guy on the autism spectrum, brilliant but awkward. Kimberly (Scott) a former popular girl who’s fallen to semi-loner. Trini (Becky G) the new girl who’s moved to town multiple times, she’s mysterious and a little angry. Lastly, we have Zack (Ludi Lin) a rebel with a heart of gold. They must fight the ultimate evil in Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) before she takes over the world.

What We Think: I had a ton of fun with this. I’ll be 100% with you I used to be a huge fan of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I took that out of the equation. With that being considered I still really enjoyed this film. I thought it was so much fun! Some of the plot points leave a bit to be desired. Solid acting from the young leads and despite whatever money it did or did not make I’d love to see a sequel. They end up giving us some hints as to what that’ll entail and if that teaser takes us in the direction I think it will then take my money once again! Cranston is cool a Zordon, even if a little underused and a bit of a douche bag. Even if I didn’t like Alpha 5’s presentation I liked Bill Hader’s voice coming through him. Like I said I turned my brain off and enjoyed this!

Our Grade: B-, I recommend everyone check this out as it is a great time at the movies. You’ll have a fun time and you’ll really get attached to the characters. RJ Cyler continues to put in great work and he’s probably the best part of the movie much like he was in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.  This young man certainly has a star that I want to see shining. Rangers fans may notice a couple of familiar faces in a cameo capacity.
