Title: Arrival
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Starring: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker
Runtime: 1 hr 56 mins

What It Is: When a strange object appears in the skies of Montana we find out that it is just one of 11 others around the world. The aliens found within it speak a language we cannot read and cannot comprehend…yet. When the government calls in linguistics expert Louise Banks (Adams) she will try to figure out why they are here and what their intentions are. With the help of United States Colonel Weber (Whitaker) and scientist Ian Donnelly (Renner).

What We Think: Absolutely breathtaking! I had my list. It was locked up! My top ten of the year was set. Then on a cold wintery day in mid-December, I got to witness this wonderful piece of sci-fi. Villeneuve is a modern master. He crafts a story that could’ve been too much to handle, he, of course, uses his dexterous ability behind the lens to make this super difficult material just a bit easier. Amy Adams is great here, but at this point when isn’t she? As I discussed in my review of Nocturnal Animals she is prolific at this point. Looking at everything though director Denis Villeneuve is the true star of this film. His hot streak continues. From 2105’s underrated gem Sicario to Prisoners this dude is amazing!

Our Grade: A+, Talk about an existential crisis! That is what this film will leave you with. Are we alone? This film doesn’t so much answer that, that isn’t what it is concerned with. It is an exploration of the human psyche, the importance of communication and how that stretches beyond our atmosphere. I cannot recommend this film any more highly than I am right now! This is absolutely one of 2016’s best go freaking see it ASAP!
