Title: Queen of Earth
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Alex Ross Perry
Starring: Elisabeth Moss, Katherine Waterston, Patrick Fugit
Runtime: 1 hour 30 mins

What It Is: Catherine (Moss) has just been told by her boyfriend James (Kentucker Audley) that he’s seeing another woman, and has been for a while. In fact just before the death of Catherine beloved father, a famous New York City artist. Distraught after such a tumultuous period in her life Cathrerine decides to take a vacation to visit her best friend Virginia (Waterston) at her lake house. What they’ll discover is that perhaps the two of them, though very similar are not so much alike as they seem to believe.

What We Think: Elisabeth Moss is a revelation! Not only does she continue to thrive in the independent scene, but this might be her best role yet! She conveys, fully, what depression can do to the human psyche. Throughout Catherine seems to be gradually losing it. Virginia is attempting to help her, but she cannot. This is a marvelous film, and one of the years best thus far. Ross Perry has (for me) hit it with his last two films (this one included), don’t believe me? Check out our review of last years Listen Up Philip. So much of this film is carried by Moss. Credit also goes to Patrick Fugit, who is normally very good no matter the size of the role he’s given. Here he works almost as the personification of Catherine’s anxiety. Her paranoia, and depression are all she can see in him, and he only sees her as this spoiled, sheltered child.

Our Grade: A, Go see this picture! It’s got some tension that is reminiscent of a quality thriller. It also mixes in some interesting horror and psychosocial elements to it. Alex Ross Perry I say to you kudos! I look forward to seeing whatever you do next. Likewise I am going to tell my audience to see your movie! Tension, terror and an uncertain future are what really makes this film!
