Review: Tomorrowland

Title: Tomorrowland
MPAA Rating: PG
Director: Brad Bird
Starring: Britt Robertson, George Clooney, Raffey Cassidy
Runtime: 2 hrs 10 mins

What It Is: In the 1960’s a secret society was built with the intent of creating a world unscathed by Earth, where all of humanity creative minds could meld. Minds that could conglomerate into a Tomorrowland, a place where anything is possible. Cut to a modern day NASA launch area and you get young Casey sabotaging the area which is one reason her dad may lose his job. Meanwhile after her arrest for this vandalism she receives a mysterious pin which takes her to a place that is all too real.

What We Think: It beats you over the head with its environmentally conscious message. Within that the whole narrative tends to take an odd, and very unsatisfying turn. Instead of an actual protagonist we’re left with pseudo reflectionist absurdity, and a message that we’re both the problem and the solution. This was suppose to be a vehicle for Britt Robertson, instead she’s left stranded by the ridiculousness contained within the script. Hugh Laurie is absolutely wasted as the “villain” and I’m not even sure what movie some of the scenes in this are from. It’s a very disjointed movie.

Our Grade: C-, I was so looking forward to this movie and it let me down oh so much. It’s a really clumsy effort from the normally solid Bird. I think he and Damon Lindelof’s script is the whole problem. It’s focus is all wrong, and comes off too heavy handed. From a visual standpoint this thing looks solid. It brings the wonder, but it brings the blunder in equal measure. It’s lack of box-office success really points to the fact that the marketing wasn’t properly prioritized. See this only if you want to support Brad Bird, or George Clooney, or perhaps you really love Tim McGraw?
