Title: Dope
MPAA Rating: R
Director: Rick Famuyiwa
Starring: Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons
Runtime: R

What It Is: Malcolm and his two best friends are just a bunch of nerds growing in the worst neighborhoods in Los Angeles…Inglewood. But Malcolm (moore) is an ambitious young man with his eyes set on Harvard. Only one big problem people from “the bottoms” don’t usually get away from there. Malcolm however isn’t like others where he lives. First off her and his friends are obsessed with 1990’s hip-hop, and as you can see from above they tend to dress in the style of that decade. Now an unforeseen problem has reared it’s ugly head, and Malcolm along with his friends/bandmates Diggy (Clemons) and Jib (Revolori) have to deal with it.

What We Think: Never has a films title been more accurate a summation of the experience that occurs in the theater. You see this film truly is…dope! Even the thought of a rapper having a cameo might be enough to derail a whole film! However Rakim Mayers (aka A$ap Rocky) doesn’t harm the film in anyway. The three friends in the lead roles are great and their camaraderie is solidifying of the whole film. There’s a realness to this movie, a sort of feeling that what is happening could be happening on any given day in Los Angeles.

Our Grade: A, Produced by both Forrest Whitaker and Pharrell Williams there’s some great music in this film. This is definitely one you need to check out when it drops next week. This might end up being the one of the best movies of 2015 when it’s all said and done. Tony Revolori was in last year’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and here he’s a lot different. Some of the language might be a bit much, but it’s in keeping with the “realness” of what the film is trying to convey.
