Title: The Book of Life

What It Is:  With the story of two young men Joaquin (Tatum) and Manolo (Luna) who have a mutual crush on the lovely young lass Maria (Zoe Saldana). The three live in San Angel which is Mexican lore is seen as “el centro del mundo” or in English the center of the world. You see the secret below San Angel is that underneath it is a wonderful place known as “The Land of the Remembered” a place where those who’ve passed on and are still loved love for however long they are remain loved. Its leader is a lovely sugar skull clad gal named La Muerte. And below that is “The Land of the Forgotten” run by the somewhat sinister Xibalba. He’s tired of being in such a drab place such as this and each leader hedges their bets on one of our young heroes. Who will win Maria heart?

What We Think:
Not only is this a visually stunning feat, but it’s journey is heartfelt, charming, and ironically full of life. All the colors are brilliant both in San Angel, but especially in The Land of the Remembered. The voice work is top notch and Diego Luna is just excellent as Manolo. There’s something for everyone here great mariachi covers of contemporary favorite songs for the perfect mix of fun for both adults and children.

Our Grade: A+,Simply put this is my favorite animated film thus far in 2014. It is not only a joy but a pleasure to watch the entire runtime. The cast sound like they’re putting in their best efforts. And Gutierrez direction really bring out the best of this extraordinary ensemble cast. Go see this bring your kids bring your grandparents bring everyone they’re all going to enjoy it. And that is a sign of a truly great animated feature. I look forward to seeing where else it may take this story. Guillermo del Toro put his name on this and that should be enough to tell you its quality. The Book of Life opens October 17th.
